Voices of the Past
Hear from Life Members, Founders, and volunteers of the club over the past 60 years!
Marilyn Arnold has been a dedicated member of Mackay Musical Comedy Players for decades, now a life member, known especially for her incredible talent and commitment in the costume department. Working alongside Glad Bowe and Millie Reid, Marilyn helped bring countless productions to life with her eye for detail, creativity, and tireless behind-the-scenes work. Her contribution to the visual storytelling of MMCP’s shows has left a lasting legacy onstage and in the memories of cast, crew, and audiences alike.
Margaret Harvison has been part of the Mackay Musical Comedy Players story since the very beginning, appearing in the club’s inaugural production of The Boyfriend in 1965. A natural performer with a commanding stage presence, she went on to star in many leading roles, including The King and I, My Fair Lady, and The Music Man. Beyond the spotlight, Margaret also played a vital role behind the scenes, serving in various committee positions and supporting the club’s growth over the decades. Now a proud Life Member, her legacy is woven into the very fabric of MMCP.
Few names are as synonymous with Mackay Musical Comedy Players as Ken and Bernice Martin. Involved since the 1960s, Ken and Bernice brought their shared passion and talents to every corner of the club — Ken with his creative ingenuity and Bernice as a musical director, pianist, and vocal coach.
They were a true theatre family, often appearing in or working on shows alongside their children, making MMCP not just a creative outlet, but a second home. From memorable productions like South Pacific and The Music Man to countless working bees and rehearsals, Ken and Bernice’s commitment helped shape the culture of collaboration and community that MMCP is known for today.
From the bright lights of the stage to the camaraderie behind the scenes, Reg Ross has been part of MMCP’s heart since the early years. A talented performer and dedicated club member, Reg’s passion for theatre has inspired not only audiences, but also his family — with his daughter Sharon Thompson and grandson Jackson Thompson proudly carrying on the tradition. His story is one of talent, commitment, and a legacy that now spans three generations of MMCP performers.
As one of MMCP’s founding members in 1965, Lynette Denny holds a special place in the club’s history. She was the leading lady in The Boyfriend, MMCP’s very first production, and has been part of the journey ever since. From helping establish the club in its earliest days to celebrating six decades of theatre in Mackay, Lynnette’s story is a treasured piece of our history. In her interview, she reflects on the friendships, performances, and memories that have made MMCP such a vibrant part of the community.
